WILMINGTON — The Ohio Northern baseball team split an Ohio Athletic Conference double header at Wilmington on Saturday afternoon at Tewksbury-Delaney Field.
The Polar Bears (9-12 overall, 8-9 OAC) won the opener 13-1 and the Quakers (4-16, 3-13) took the nightcap 8-6.
Freshman Logan Stevens (Plain City/Alder) hit a 3-run home run to key a 4-run first inning as ONU got off to a quick start in game one.
The lead was 5-1 when Northern erupted with an 8-run eighth inning. Junior Corey McMann (Flower Mound, Tex./Liberty Christian) hit a grand slam home run to make it 12-1 in the frame.
Senior Nate Bye (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone) struck out five and allowed only one earned run in 6.2 innings of work to pick up the win.
Senior Devin Johnson (Wooster) worked out of a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the seventh then cruised in the eighth to pick up his third save of the season.
In game two, ONU scored five runs in the top of the fourth to grab a 6-2 lead.
But the Quakers responded with three in the fourth, two in the seventh and one in the eighth to win the nightcap 8-6.
Junior Chayten Overholt (Van Wert/Lincolnview) was 5-for-9 with 3 RBI and senior Matthew Burkett (Maumee) was 4-for-9 with three runs scored at the plate for Ohio Northern.
The two teams will wrap up their 4-game series with a double header at Wander Field in Ada on Sunday at 1 pm.
