AUBURNDALE, Fla. — The Ohio Northern baseball team logged its first win of the season Sunday during the RussMatt Invitational. The Polar Bears toppled Waynesburg (Pa.) 6-3 in Game 2 of a doubleheader played at Lake Myrtle #8.
ONU, which moved to 1-4 on the season, dropped the opener 8-2 despite a two-run home run by sophomore Corey McMann (Flower Mound, Tex./Liberty Christian).
Northern jumped on the Yellow Jackets early in the second game. The Polar Bears posted a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning, as freshman Vinny Sclafani (Oak Brook, Ill./Hinsdale Central) logged an RBI fielder's choice.
Junior Krue Thwaits (Greenville/Milton-Union) added to ONU's advantage with an RBI single in the third. Freshmen Nate Webb (Liberty, Ind./Union County) and Jacob Wenning (Coldwater) each chipped in an RBI, as well, to make it 5-0.
The Jackets plated a run in the top half of the sixth, but junior Andy Mills (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) got it right back for the Polar Bears on an RBI sac fly.
Senior Jack Schaller (Bowling Green) received the start for Northern, and he lasted six innings. He surrendered two earned runs on seven hits with six strikeouts.
The Polar Bears battle St. John Fischer (N.Y.) Monday at 9:15 a.m.
