LOUISVILLE, Ky. — The Ohio Northern baseball team celebrated a couple of home runs Sunday, however, dropped a pair of games to close out play at the Derby City Classic. Junior Matthew Burkett (Maumee) and freshman Jacob Wenning (Coldwater) went yard, but the Polar Bears fell to Aurora (Ill.) 5-4 and Spalding (Ky.) 8-6 at Derby City Field.
Junior Andy Mills (Cincinnati/St. Xavier) and sophomore Corey McMann (Flower Mound, Tex./Liberty Christian) enjoyed three-hit games against the Spartans. Burkett, with his home run, Mills and Wenning all had RBIs against Aurora.
Senior Troy Wagner (Liberty Township/Lakota West) recorded three innings of scoreless relief with one strikeout.
Burkett added to his big day with three more hits against the Golden Eagles, which included an RBI. Junior Krue Thwaits (Greenville/Milton-Union) had a pair of hits and knocked a run home, while Wenning plated three with his homer.
Freshman Tim Knapschaefer (Maria Stein/Marion Local) twirled three innings of scoreless relief against Spalding with two strikeouts.
The Polar Bears — who own an 0-3 overall record — travel to Auburndale, Florida, for the RussMatt Invitational beginning March 1.
