ADA — The College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) have named senior baseball player Caleb Thomas (Strongsville) a First-Team Google Cloud Academic All-District 7 honoree for the second consecutive season, the national office announced Thursday.
To be considered, student-athletes must be a sophomore-or-higher in academic standing, serve as a starter or important reserve player for their respective team, and have a 3.30 minimum cumulative grade point average on a 4.0 scale at his current institution. In addition, all nominees must have participated in 50 percent of the team's competitions at their designated position.
Sports information directors at member institutions within the region then vote on nominees based upon their on-field success and academic achievements.
Thomas was named a First-Team CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-District 7 selection and a Second-Team CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-American during the 2018 campaign.
He has also earned Academic All-Ohio Athletic Conference kudos in 2017 and 2018, All-OAC First-Team accolades in 2018, and OAC Hitter of the Week honors once during his four-year career.
This season, Thomas leads Ohio Northern with two home runs. He is also tied for second on the team with 24 RBI and ranks second with 145 at-bats. The senior has added 13 runs, five doubles, and 40 total hits on a .276 batting average in 2019.
In four seasons with the Polar Bears, Thomas has compiled a .272 batting average in 489 career at-bats with 85 RBI, 70 runs scored, nine home runs, and four stolen bases.
The Strongsville native currently ranks eighth all-time at Ohio Northern with 31 career doubles. In addition, he is a member of the ONU 100-Hit Club with 133 career base hits, which ranks 32nd-most in program history.
As a First-Team Academic All-District honoree, Thomas will be on the CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-America ballot. The All-America teams are scheduled to be announced on Tuesday, June 4.
The Polar Bears finished the 2019 regular season with a 22-16 overall record and a 10-8 OAC mark, which tied for third in the final league standings. Ohio Northern is competing this weekend in the OAC Tournament at Baldwin Wallace for the second consecutive season.
