TIFFIN — The Ohio Northern baseball team opened the Ohio Athletic Conference portion of its schedule with two losses at Heidelberg on Saturday afternoon at Happy Valley.
The Polar Bears fall to 7-6 overall and are 0-2 in OAC play, while the Student Princes improve to 12-3, 2-0 after the 14-0 and 13-3 decisions.
Sophomore Matthew Burkett (Maumee) went 4-for-5 with a stolen base and an RBI to lead the ONU offense.
In Game 1, junior Nate Bye (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone) took a shutout into the sixth inning in a scoreless tie before HU plated three runs to go up 3-0.
Heidelberg then scored eight more runs in the seventh and went on to the win.
In game two, Burkett was 3-for-3 with an RBI, joining freshman Corey McMann (Flower Mound, Tex./Liberty Christian) with RBI singles in the fifth as ONU pulled within 4-2.
But HU would get three in the bottom of the fifth and six more in the bottom of the seventh.
The Polar Bears will have a quick turnaround with a noon non-conference doubleheader at Trine (Ind.) on Sunday.
