LANCASTER — The Ohio Northern baseball team got dominating pitching performances in a 2-1, 6-0 sweep at Capital on Monday afternoon at Beavers Field.
The Polar Bears (14-6 overall, 2-2 Ohio Athletic Conference) got a 4-hit shutout in the nightcap from sophomore Josh Mohr (Oregon/Clay).
In the opener, sophomore Nate Bye (Thorntown, Ind./Western Boone) allowed one unearned run and just four hits in 7.2 innings and sophomore Scott Beaton (Novi, Mich.) threw the final 1.1 innings of shutout baseball to earn his first collegiate victory for ONU.
With the game tied at 1-1 in the top of the ninth, senior Jordan Bostater (Bryan) singled home senior Jason Burkett (Maumee) with the go-ahead run.
Bye threw the first 7.2 innings and gave up just unearned run in the bottom of the eighth and left the game with the score tied at 1-1.
Beaton snuffed the rally by retiring the first batter he faced in the eighth and finished out the game by allowing only a bunt single in the ninth to improve to 1-1 on the season.
In the night cap, Mohr struck out eight in his first career shutout.
Offensively, junior Caleb Thomas (Strongsville) went 3-for-5 with two doubles and four RBI and senior Hayden Shenefield (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) was 3-for-5 to lead Ohio Northern.
The lead was 1-0 after six innings, but ONU would score in each of the final three innings to put the game away.
The Polar Bears are scheduled to return to action on Tuesday with a 4:15 pm game at Kalamazoo (Mich.)
