ADA -- The Ohio Northern baseball team dropped two contests as OAC-foe Mount Union defeated ONU 6-2, 9-1 Saturday afternoon at Wander Field.
The Polar Bears fall to 11-12 overall and 2-4 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Purple Raiders improve to 18-5, 7-1.
The Purple Raiders got on board first in the top of the second inning as they scored three runs to take an early 3-0 lead.
MtU would build its lead to 4-0 in the top of third inning with an RBI groundout.
Mount Union would add two more runs over the next six innings to take a 6-0 lead after nine inning.
After a single from junior Jordan Bostater (Bryan) and a pinch run from freshman Brandon Bartlome (Sheffield Village/Lorain) in the bottom of the ninth, junior Hayden Shenefield (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) hit an RBI single down the left field line to plate Bartlome and close the gap to 6-1.
From the, sophomore Luke Klinehoffer (Zanesville/John Glenn) would hit an RBI single to left field and pull ONU within 6-2 before the MtU defense closed out the contest and sealed the 6-2 victory.
Mount Union picked up where it left off in game one as the Purple Raiders opened the second contest with a 2-run home run in the top of the third inning.
A solo home run in the top of the sixth pushed the MtU lead to 3-0 in the second contest.
Mount Union added six more runs over the next two innings to take a 9-0 lead in the eighth inning before junior Brandon Kasberg (Mentor) got on base with a single and Bostater helped him advance to third base with a single.
From there Kasberg would score Northern's first score of the second contest on a passed ball to close the lead to 9-1.
ONU could not get any closer as Mount Union went on to win.
Northern will return to action Tuesday afternoon as they travel to Wilmington to take on the Quakers in a double header at 1 pm.
