CRESTVIEW HILLS, Ky. — Sophomore Caleb Thomas (Strongsville) hit a 2-RBI home run over the center field fence as the Ohio Northern baseball team defeated Thomas More (Ky.) 3-2, before falling in the nightcap 10-3 at Thomas More Field.
The Polar Bears move to 8-5 on the year, while the Saints move to 5-3.
Thomas went 2-for-4 in the first contest and added two RBI and a run scored to lead ONU.
After junior Brandon Kasberg (Mentor) reached on an error, Thomas' home run would give Northern the opening two runs of the contest to give ONU a 2-0 lead early on.
Northern would add one more run in the top of the fifth as sophomore Luke Klinehoofer hit a sac fly to center field and plated sophomore Adam Wilson (Maineville/Archbishop Moeller) to push the lead to 3-0.
The Saints would score in the bottom of the seventh and ninth, but could not get any closer as ONU took game one 3-2.
Senior Devin Carr (Newark/Licking Valley) remained perfect on the season as he struck out three batters in 7.2 innings to move to 3-0 on the season.
Junior T.J. Storer (Loveland/Moeller) earned his fourth save of the season for ONU.
In the second contest, Thomas More jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first.
Northern would climb back into the contest as freshman Scott Beaton (Novi, Mich.) scored on a wild pitch to pull ONU within 2-1.
The Polar Bears would strike again in the top of the sixth as junior Dan Barna (Cranberry Township, Pa./Seneca Valley) scored on a wild pitch to knot the game at 2-2.
The Saints would score the contests next seven runs over the next two innings to take a commanding 9-2 lead into the eighth inning.
Freshman Jared Breeze (Cincinnati/Turpin) was able to make it home in the top of the eighth on a wild pitch to close the gap to 9-3, but TMC would add another run in the bottom of the eighth to seal the 10-3 victory.
Northern will return to the field Tuesday as it travels to Trine (Ind.) to take on the Thunder at 4 pm.
