AUBURNDALE, Fla. -- The Ohio Northern baseball team won game one, before being edged in the final inning and falling to Bridgewater (Va.) in game two on Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
The Polar Bears improve to 3-1 overall, while the Eagles move to 5-4 on the year.
Sophomore Caleb Thomas (Strongsville) led Northern at the plate in game one as he went 2-for-3, including a double.
Junior Brandon Kasberg (Mentor) scored the lone run for ONU in the first contest after junior Jordan Bostater (Bryan) earned a groundout RBI in the bottom of the sixth to plate Kasberg.
Senior Devin Carr (Newark/Licking Valley) earned the victory on the mound for Northern as he went 6.2 innings and struck out five batters.
Junior T.J. Storer (Loveland/Moeller) recorded his first save of the season.
In the second contest, the Polar Bears fell behind 2-0 early in the contest as the Eagles scored twice in the bottom of the first inning.
After four scoreless innings, Thomas got on base after being hit by a pitch and Bostater advanced him to third base on a double to right field.
Back-to-back singles from junior Hayden Shenefield (Powell/Worthington Kilbourne) and senior Kyle Schlade (Hamilton/Talawanda) would drive home Thomas and Bostater to knot the game at 2-2.
Northern would threaten again in the top of the eighth, but the Eagle defense would get out of the jam to keep the game tied 2-2 heading into the fourth.
BC was able to win with a walkoff single in bottom of the ninth.
Schlade went 2-for-3 in the second game and added an RBI to lead the Polar Bears.
The Polar Bears return to action Tuesday as they take on Pitt.-Greensburg at 12 pm at Lake Myrtle Park on field No. 3.
