ADA -- Sophomore Jason Burkett led the Ohio Northern baseball team as they split a twin-bill with OAC foe Heidelberg Saturday afternoon at Wander Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 16-15 overall and 6-8 in the Ohio Athletic Conference, while the Student Princes fall to 14-19, 5-9.
Burkett went a combined 3-for-6 during the two games and added three runs for Northern.
In game one Northern got on the board in the bottom of the second inning as senior Clay Small drove home Burkett with an RBI single to left field to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead.
ONU would continue adding runs to the scoreboard in the bottom of the third inning as senior Nick Eltzroth hit a single to left center field with the bases loaded and plated senior Andy Lubonovic and sophomore Hayden Shenefield to push the lead to 3-0.
Freshman Luke Klinehoffer was able to extend the lead in the bottom of the seventh inning as he hit an infield single to the short stop and scored freshman Austin Peterson.
The Polar Bears would close the door in the eighth inning as they added two insurance runs.
Sophomores Dan Barna and Burkett were able to score and seal the game one victory after Lubonovic dropped a single in the right field gap.
ONU found themselves in a hole early on in game two after Heidelberg hit two home runs over the left field fence and took a 4-0 lead in the second inning.
The Polar Bears were able to close the gap in the bottom of the fourth inning as Small reached on an error by the third baseman and Burkett scored to pull ONU within 4-1.
ONU would not manage to get any closer as Heidelberg went on to win 7-1.
Northern will return to action Tuesday as they welcome Kalamazoo (Mich.) to Wander Field for a twin-bill at 1 pm.
