ADA -- Senior Andy Lubonovic hit his first career home run as the Ohio Northern baseball team split a double header with Trine (Ind.) 6-3, 5-10 Saturday afternoon at Wander Field.
The Polar Bears improve to 8-5 overall, while the Thunder improve to 4-6 on the year.
In game one, Trine got on the board early after Drew Palmer doubled to left center field and plated a run for the Thunder.
Northern would waste no time in answering back as they loaded the bases in the bottom of the second inning and sophomore Dan Barna would hit a two RBI single to center field to score sophomores Braydon Focht and Brandon Kasberg.
On the ensuing at bat senior Andy Lubonovic would hit his first career homerun over the left field fence to push the Polar Bear lead to 5-1.
After senior Clay Small and Kasberg got on base, Lubonovic would lay down a bunt and plate Kasberg to add an insurance run and give Northern a 6-1 lead in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Thunder would add two more runs in the fifth and sixth inning but did not get any closer as Ohio Northern went on to win 6-3.
Senior Nick Eltzroth earned the victory on the mound for Northern and improved to 3-1 on the year as he went five inning and struck out seven batters.
With the save in game one, sophomore T.J. Storer claimed sole posession of third place all-time at Ohio Northern with eight career saves.
In the nightcap, Trine jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after scoring in the first and third inning.
Northern was able to narrow the Thunder lead as Focht would hit an RBI single to the shortstop and and drive Kasberg home in the bottom of the third inning.
The Polar Bears added four more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as freshman Adam Wilson, Barna, Small and Kasberg all scored.
Trine would regain the lead in the sixth inning as they posted seven runs and pulled ahead 9-5.
TU added an insurance run in the ninth inning to seal the victory.
Northern will return to action Tuesday as they play host to Defiance at 3:30 pm at Wander Field.
