ADA — The Ohio Northern baseball team swept Oberlin Saturday afternoon at Wander Field, winning game one 7-2 and game two in walk-off fashion 1-0.
The Polar Bears move to 6-4 overall on the season, while Oberlin falls to 0-2.
Senior Alex Crabtree led the Polar Bears on the day, tying a career-high 10 strikeouts in seven innings of work.
Senior Nick Eltzroth got the call in game one, recording eight strike outs in six innings of work.
In game one, the Polar Bears found themselves trailing 1-0 early but would eventually plate a run in the bottom of the third inning as sophomore Jordan Bostater doubled to right field scoring Eltzroth.
Northern would plate two more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning as a single from senior Cody Meyer would score sophomore Jason Burkett.
Burkett would later score following a miscue from the Oberlin catcher putting the Polar Bears on top 3-1.
ONU would score three more runs in the bottom of the sixth inning as senior Clay Small would lead off the inning with a single to second base.
Small would later score on a single from senior Andy Lubonovic giving ONU the 4-1 advantage.
Later in the inning, sophomore Braydon Focht would record his first RBI of the contest as he singled to second, plating two more runs for the Polar Bears.
Northern would add an insurance run in the seventh inning to win 7-2.
With the win, Eltzroth improves to 2-1 overall on the year.
Game two was much more of a defensive battle as neither team could really get anything going.
The Oberlin pitcher, Sean Kiley would surrender his first hit of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning as Eltzroth doubled to center for the Polar Bears.
Kiley would go onto retire the side leaving Eltzroth stranded on the base pads.
In the sixth inning, the Northern offense would threaten to score as two runners would reach scoring position before the Oberlin defense was able to retire the side once more.
The Polar Bears would threaten again in the eighth inning as Eltzroth tripled to right field before getting thrown out at home ending the inning.
The Polar Bears would break the scoreless tie in the 11th inning as Small singled to left center scoring the game winning run.
Norhtern returns to action Tuesday at 4:15 pm as they travel to Bluffton.
