AUBURNDALE, FLA. -- The No. 24-ranked Ohio Northern baseball team opened the 2016 season with a double header split with Rose-Hulman (Ind.) Sunday afternoon at Lake Myrtle Park in Auburndale, Fla.
The Polar Bears improve to 1-1-0 on the season, while Fightin' Engineers improve to 1-1-0 on the year.
Senior Nick Eltzroth led the way for the Polar Bears as he scored the lone run in game one for Northern and pitched a complete game.
The senior went 2-for-3 in game one and scored in the bottom of the fourth to give ONU the lead.
After Eltzroth singled to right field, sophomore Jordan Bostater would single to right field and advance Eltzroth to second.
Eltzroth and Bostater would each advance a base after a throwing error from the RHIT catcher.
On the ensuing pitch Eltzroth would score to put Northern ahead for good in game one.
Eltzroth earned the victory in game one and improved his record to 1-0-0 on the season.
Game two was a defensive battle until Rose-Hulman was able to explode for seven runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Senior Ben Glischinski threw six strikeouts for the Polar Bears in game two to lead the pitching staff.
Northern will retun to action Monday as they travel to Auburndale (Fla.) to take on St. John Fisher (N.Y.) at 10:30 am at Lake Myrtle Park.
