ADA — Amidst the intense summer heat wave in the area, the infield at Wander Field is getting a tune-up.
J & D Turf is replacing the infield with new grass and is improving the drainage, pitching mound and home plate areas.
Among the improvements will be a warning track around the fence in the infield between the dugouts, an expanded dirt area around first and third bases and a better crown for drainage.
"The new playing surface is a dramatic and necessary upgrade for our program," said ONU's second-year head coach Gene Stechschulte. "As we continue to transform our roster, this change will serve as another tool to attract elite talent. This is another great step in the process of building a championship level program."
J & D Turf is a company that specializes in athletic fields. The company has helped many NCAA Division I schools such as Notre Dame, Indiana, Indiana State, Butler and Valparaiso.
The NFL's Indianapolis Colts and minor league baseball teams Dayton Dragons and Fort Wayne Tin Caps have also worked with J & D Turf on their playing surfaces.
Work began on July 5 and is expected to be completed by July 11.
