Ada, OH — The Ohio Northern baseball team was unable to get its bats going as it dropped a pair of Ohio Athletic Conference games to Wilmington at Tewksbury-Delaney Field on Wednesday afternoon.
The Wilmington pitching staff stifled the Polar Bear offense, limiting it to one run and 16 hits in the doubleheader, as the Quakers won by scores of 5-1 and 1-0.
Wilmington improves to 7-10 overall (2-2 OAC), while the Polar Bears fall to 13-7 (1-3 OAC)
ONU was unable to take advantage of an excellent outing by junior Cody Fisher (Helena/Gibsonburg), who threw 6.0 innings, allowing one unearned run, two walks and six hits while striking out five.
Reigning OAC Hitter of the Week Cory Martin (Akron/Ellet) led Northern offensively, finishing the day 3 for 7 with a double.
With a 1-0 lead in the first game, Wilmington used a pair of RBI doubles and an RBI single in the fifth inning to push the lead to 4-0.
After a Brett McEvoy solo homer in the sixth, ONU scored its only run of the day when a fielder's choice by junior Eric Yunker (Holland/Toledo Christian) drove in senior Mike Hoelzel (Canfield).
Jake Vinkovich tossed 6.1 innings for Wilmington to pick up the win and improve to 2-1, while junior Ryan Damman (Fremont/Ross) took the loss, falling to 1-1.
In the nightcap, Wilmington picked up its only run after an ONU throwing error in the second inning.
ONU's best chance of the game came in the ninth inning when Hoelzel and Eric Yunker had back-to-back one-out singles, but Wilmington forced a fly out and groundout to end the game.
Wilmington's Jared Ramsey threw a complete game shutout, striking out nine and allowing seven hits.
Freshman Andrew Tople (Indianapolis, Ind./New Palestine) tossed 2.0 scoreless innings in relief for ONU, allowing one hit and fanning one batter.
The Polar Bears will look to rebound tomorrow as they travel to Wittenberg for a single game at 6 p.m. before another OAC doubleheader at No. 3-ranked Marietta on Saturday at 1 p.m.
