LEESBURG, Fla. — ONU senior Mark Sankovich threw complete a game shutout, allowing just one hit in a 4-0 victory in Game 1 of a double header split with Milwaukee School of Engineering (Wis.) Saturday afternoon at Lake Sumter CC.
The Raiders turned the tables on Northern in Game 2 and took an 8-1 victory.
The split means ONU returns home from its spring trip with a 4-3 record.
MSOE is now 2-2 on the season.
Sankovich improves to 2-0 on the season after his second straight complete game victory.
He allowed just the one hit while striking out six.
He has yet to allow an earned run in 14 innings of work.
The Raiders Kevin Curtin (0-1) also pitched a complete game and struck out eight.
ONU opened the scoring in the third as sophomore Brandon Hubbard started the inning with a single and a stolen base.
He advanced to third on a ground out and then scored on Brett Katana's single to right to give Northern a 1-0 lead.
The Bears tacked on three more runs in the fourth as sophomore Loren Fleischman led off the inning with a triple.
After a Drew Robinson walk, first baseman Jeff Pope singled to center to score Fleischman.
Robinson later scored on a sacrifice fly by freshman Mike Hoelzel and Pope crossed the plate on a single by sophomore Greg Gibbons to put ONU ahead by the final margin of 4-0.
In game two, the Raiders Jake Lathers (1-0) and Kyle Schmocker limited to the Polar Bears to just two hits in the 8-1 victory.
Fleischman collected one of the Polar Bear hits to give him at least one hit in each of the first seven games.
He is batting .423 (11-of-26) on the season and leads the team with six runs batted in.
MSOE got a run in the first and then jumped on ONU starter Brian Hill (0-1) in the third.
The Raiders scored four runs on five hits and two ONU errors to grab a 5-0 lead.
Northern's lone run came on Katana's sac fly in the sixth but the Raiders scored three more in the bottom of the inning for an 8-1 advantage.
ONU had a team batting average of .305 and was 28-of-33 in stolen base attempts in the seven games in Florida.
The Polar Bears return home and will play a three-game series at Centre (Ky.) next weekend.
The teams will play a double header on Saturday beginning at 2 pm and a single game on Sunday at Noon.
