ADA — Ohio Northern opened play of its 43rd Annual ONU Invitational on Friday with a 25-12, 25-13, 25-8 victory over DePauw (Ind.) and a 25-14, 23-25, 25-22, 25-14 victory over Earlham (Ind.) at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears (8-2 overall) got a match-high nine kills from sophomore Sonia Dahlin (Minnetonka, Minn./Minnetonka) and a match-high 16 digs from sophomore Rachel Jennings (Novi, Mich./Novi) in the victory over DePauw in the afternoon.
The Tigers (5-5) got a team-high seven kills from Ashley Haas.
DePauw played the Polar Bears tight to open the first set tying it at 5-all. ONU pulled away the rest of the set to seal a 25-12 victory.
Northern got off to a quick start in set two, jumping out to a 20-6 lead and cruising to a 25-13 victory behind 7 kills from junior Ava Ehlinger (New Carlisle/Tecumseh).
The Polar Bears raced out to a 19-5 lead in Set 3 before putting the match away 25-8, with a kill from junior Kassie Bowmar (Sunbury/Big Walnut).
The Polar Bears hit .455 for the match with 36 digs, 42 kills and just 7 errors.
In the nightcap against Earlham (Ind.), Kaidie Carstensen drilled 13 kills and Rachel Jennings added 16 digs to lead Northern to a 4 set victory
The Quakers (4-6) got a match-high 15 kills from Maria Young.
Northern hit .360 in the first set with 13 kills and 4 errors on just 25 attempts, while holding Earlham to .033 hitting on seven kills, 6 errors and 30 attacks.
The set was tied at 10 before the Polar Bears finished on a 15-4 run to put the set away 25-14.
Earlham got out to a 9-4 lead in set 2, hitting .343 with 17 kills on 35 attempts. A 6-2 run got the hosts within 1 the match was nearly even after with Northern tying it three times at 16, 21, and 23. EC scored the final two points to take the set 25-23.
Northern grabbed a 12-4 lead to start and held on for a 25-22 win in Set 3. Erin Wagner pounded a set-high 5 kills in just 6 attacks.
The Quakers used a quick start to draw a 6-3 advantage in set four. Northern responded with a 15-6 run to claim an 18-12 advantage they would not relinquish. The Polar Bears closed 7-2 to win the set 25-14 and the match 3-1.
Ohio Northern hit .273 for the match with 60 kills and 21 errors on 143 attacks, while Earlham hit .189 with 45 kills and 20 errors on 132 attempts.
The Polar Bears will complete their ONU Invitational action Saturday afternoon at 12:30 p.m. with a match against Wisconsin-Oshkosh.
