ADA — The Ohio Northern volleyball team had its final non-conference action before Ohio Athletic Conference play opens up, sweeping both Defiance and Kenyon on Saturday afternoon inside the ONU Sports Center.
ONU improves to 10-3 overall behind 20 kills and eight block assists from senior All-American Chelsea Huppert (Bremen, Ind.); 63 assists, nine digs, six block assists, and five kills from sophomore Kiki Carle (Cincinnati/Mother of Mercy); and 28 digs and two service aces from senior McKenna Hostetler (Plain City/Alder).
Freshman Madison Kern (Loveland/Mount Notre Dame) added 14 kills and eight total blocks on the day.
Sophomore Hannah Irmer (Indianapolis, Ind./Roncalli) and freshman Hannah Hall (Centerville/Alter) chipped in 16 and 15 digs, respectively.
Defiance falls to 10-5 and Kenyon drops to 2-8 on the season.
Against Defiance, Northern trailed 9-7 and 12-9 in the first set before going on an 11-2 run to gain a 20-14 advantage. A kill by Kern gave the Polar Bears a 25-19 first set win.
During the second set, ONU race out to a 12-3 lead. DC came to within 23-19 before block assist by Huppert and Carle closed the set at 25-19.
The Polar Bears opened the third set by going up 13-4. ONU pulled away, winning the set 25-15 to clinch the match.
Against Kenyon, ONU held leads of 13-7 and 16-9 en route to taking the first set 25-15.
Once again, Northern raced out to an early lead in the second set, taking a 8-2 edge. Kenyon was able to come within 13-11, but the Polar Bears won six of the next seven points to go up 19-12.
A kill by freshman Megan Mahon (Amelia/West Clermont) clinched the second set at 25-16.
In the third and final set, ONU led 18-16 prior to scoring seven of the final eight points, winning the set 25-17 to take the match.
Ohio Northern returns to action with its OAC opener, home against Muskingum on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
