Junior Ashley Borchers leads Volleyball as they defeat John Carroll 25-27, 25-19, 25-22, 25-15

ADA — The Ohio Northern volleyball team defeated John Carroll Saturday afternoon 25-27, 25-19, 25-22 and 25-15 in its Ohio Athletic Conference season opener at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears improve to 15-4 overall, 1-0 OAC, while John Carroll falls to 8-10, 0-1.
Junior Ashley Borchers led the way for Northern hitting a team-high .348 and recorded a double-double with 10 kills and 41 assists.
In set 2, junior Claire Heitkamp led the way recording six kills and hitting a team-high .267 en-route to the 25-19 victory.
John Carroll jumped out to a 5-1 advantage early in set 3 but was unable to hang on as back-to-back kills from senior Kaitlann Hogrefe and Borchers would tie the set at 13.
Northern would continue to attack in the third set as a string of kills by the Polar Bears and a Blue Streak micue would seal the ONU 25-22 set three victory.
The Polar Bears jumped out quickly in set 4, as kills from junior Kristin Sessler and Heitkamp would put ONU on top 5-1.
ONU never looked back as they out hit John Carroll in the set .205 to .068, recording 11 kills.
Heitkamp posted a team-high 11 kills in the match, while senior Ellie Gillespie recorded 10.
The Polar Bears also recorded 13 blocks in the contest.
Northern returns to action Tuesday as they travel to Wilmington to take on the Quakers at 7 pm.
