Davidson records match-high 19 kills in as Volleyball posts 3-1 victory against the Pioneers

ADA — The Ohio Northern volleyball team wrapped up the regular season with a 3-1 victory over Marietta on Friday night at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears (14-15, 5-4 OAC) defeated the Pioneers (14-15, 4-5 OAC) 25-22, 22-25, 25-21, 27-25.
Sophomore Kristen Davidson paced the Polar Bears with a match-high 19 kills, while also chipping in nine digs.
Junior Ellen Grenert and sophomore Julia Fuerst contributed 14 kills each respectively. Grenert also added 13 digs and three blocks.
Sophomore Jeni Kmic led the defensive effort with a match-high 29 digs. Sophomore Hannah Livengood recorded 17 digs and two aces.
Freshman Amanda Volosin dished out a season-high 58 assists, while adding nine digs. Freshman Rachel Olach led the squad with four blocks.
Trailing 2-5 in the opening set, the Polar Bears used kills by Davidson and Fuerst, and Pioneer attacking errors to take the 8-5 lead
Ohio Northern maintained the lead and won the set on a Davidson kill.
The Pioneers fought back from a 12-9 deficit in the second set to take a 15-13 lead. With the score tied 20-20, four Ohio Northern attack errors gave the Pioneers the second game.
With the score tied 17-17 in the third set, kills from Grenert and sophomore Jayce Born elevated the Polar Bears to a 25-21 win.
Marietta got off to a commanding lead 6-1 lead in the fourth set. Ohio Northern fought back with two service runs highlighted by kills from Fuerst and Grenert.
The two teams fought back and fourth for the remainder of the set. The Polar Bears earned a 24-22 advantage, but the Pioneers responded with three straight points.
Ohio Northern responded with two kills by Fuerst and a kill from Born to win the match.
Kathryn Hanssen and Alex VanGundy led the way for the Pioneers with 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Jen Braun registered a team-high 27 digs.
The Polar Bears will know their next opponent following the close of the OAC regular season Saturday night. Northern will face that opponent Tuesday at a time and site to be determined.
