Grenert, Yoder lead Volleyball to sweep of John Carroll
ADA — The Ohio Northern volleyball team swept John Carroll 25-22, 28-26, 25-16 in a conference matchup on Friday night at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears improved to 13-14 overall and 4-3 in conference play, while the Blue Streaks fell to 9-16 overall and 0-7 in the OAC.
Junior Ellen Grenert and sophomore Cenzie Yoder paced the Polar Bears with 13 kills each. Grenert also contributed 13 digs, while Yoder added six.
Sophomore Jeni Kmic led the defensive effort for the Polar Bears with 25 digs. Freshman Amanda Volosin dished out a match-high 35 assists, while adding eight digs.
Sophomore Hannah Livengood recorded 13 digs and a team-high three aces. Sophomore Julia Fuerst led the Polar Bears with three blocks.
The first game proved to be a back and fourth battle. With the game tied 22-22, the Polar Bears used two Grenert kills to win the first set.
The Blue Streaks earned a 20-15 edge in the second set. A four-point service run, highlighted by two LIvengood aces, tied the set at 20-20.
A Laura Sudo kill gave John Carroll a 26-25 advantage. The Polar Bears fought back and used kills from Grenert and sophomore Nicole Pottkotter to capture the second set.
The Polar Bears jumped out to a 6-1 lead thanks to a four-point service run. Livengood, Fuerst and Pottkotter contributed kills in the run.
Ohio Northern maintained the lead, and a Pottkotter kill gave the Polar Bears a 22-12 lead. A kill from freshman Rachel Olach gave the match to the Polar Bears.
Sophomore Gina Catania notched 11 kills, 15 assists and 12 for Blue Streaks.
The Polar Bears return to action on Tuesday when they travel to Heidelberg to square off against the No. 6-ranked Student Princes. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
