Curry breaks all-time singles record as Women's Tennis edges John Carroll 5-4 in semifinals of OAC Tournament

CINCINNATI — Sixth-year senior Katie Curry (Oxford/Talawanda) broke the school's all-time career singles wins record and the Ohio Northern women's tennis team advanced to the finals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament with an exciting 5-4 semifinal victory over John Carroll indoors on Friday at the Queen City Racquet Club.
The second-seeded Polar Bears improve to 19-6 overall and will play top-seeded Otterbein in the finals on Saturday at 10 am.
The third-seeded Blue Streaks end their season with a 10-8 record.
Curry and senior Jeorgia Templin (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) highlighted the grueling match that spanned more than three hours.
Curry's 6-4, 6-1 victory at No. 3 singles is the 91st of her career, breaking the record of 90 set last year by Mackenzie Wills.
With the match tied at 4-all, Templin ground out a 6-0, 7-6(2), 6-2 victory at No. 6 singles for the deciding court, advancing ONU into the finals for the fourth time in the last five tournaments.
Curry and junior Regan Landis (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) won 8-7(4) at No. 3 doubles as the Polar Bears trailed 2-1 heading into singles play.
Curry's singles got ONU within 3-2 and freshman Miranda Wills (Ada) won 6-0, 6-4 to cut the deficit to 4-3.
Freshman Katie O'Connell (Novi, Mich./Saint Catherine) racked up her team-best 23rd singles win of the year at No. 5, winning 7-5, 0-6, 6-1 to tie the match at 4-all.
Curry is now 91-21 in singles, 76-34 in doubles and 167-55 overall in her career.
