ADA — Junior Regan Landis (Elkhart, Ind./Concord) ground out a 7-6(4), 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles, breaking a 4-4 tie and lifting the Ohio Northern women's tennis team to a 5-4 victory over Wittenberg on a chilly Tuesday afternoon at the West Campus Courts.
The Polar Bears improve to 17-5 overall, while the Tigers fall to 7-9.
Northern led 2-1 after doubles play, as Landis and sixth-year senior Katie Curry (Oxford/Talawanda) won 8-2 at No. 3 doubles and senior Jeorgia Templin (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) and junior Flo Sanchez (West Chester/Lakota West) won 8-4 at No. 2 doubles.
Freshman Katie O'Connell (Novi, Mich./Saint Catherine) won 6-1, 6-0 at No. 6 singles to give ONU a 3-2 lead and freshman Miranda Wills (Ada) won 6-1, 6-2 at No. 5 singles to tie the match at 4-all.
Landis had just finished her first set with a 7-4 tiebreaker victory as Wills closed out her match and all eyes were on court 2 for the final hour of the contest.
Landis fell behind 3-0 in the second set, but rallied to win five consecutive games to serve for the match up 5-3.
But WU freshman Meera Virk broke Landis and held serve to tie the contest at 5-5.
Landis held serve to go up 6-5 and broke Virk to win 7-5 and claim the match for the Polar Bears.
Her singles contest took a full two hours and two minutes as ONU ran its winning streak to four matches.
Curry fell 6-2, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, snapping her 27-match singles winning streak, which had dated to Sept. 8, 2019.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Ohio Wesleyan for a 4:30 pm contest.
