Women's Swimming and Diving on first day of Wabash (Ind.) Invitational

CRAWFORDSVILLE, Ind. — The Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team is ninth of 10 teams after the first day of the 10-team Wabash (Ind.) Gail Moll Pebworth Invitational on Friday.
The Basics
- Records: Ohio Northern 3-3 overall, 2-1 OAC).
- Venue: Crawfordsville High School Aquatics Center - Crawfordsville, Ind.
- Ohio Northern is ninth of 10 teams with 33 points through 5 of 20 events.
- DePauw (Ind.) leads the team standings with 218.5 points, Centre (Ky.) is second with 163.5 points and Birmingham-Southern (Ala.) is third with 153 points.
Meet Highlights
- Junior Mara Brown (Fremont/Ross) was 14th in the 200 I.M. in 2:16.09 and was on both of ONU's top finishing relay teams.
- In the 50 free, freshman Ashleigh Nelson (Byron Center, Mich.) was 29th in :25.94
- In the 500 free, senior Katie Bend (Carmel, Ind.) was 22nd in 5:30.21 - a full 17 seconds faster than her effort two weeks ago at Calvin.
- The 200 free relay of junior Annie Richters (Troy/Miami East), Nelson, senior Shelby Starkey (Bellefontaine) and Brown opened the evening with a 16th place finish in 1:43.62.
- The 400 medley relay of Starkey, Brown, freshman Melina Roberts (Westlake) and Nelson finished eighth in 4:11.37.
Notables
- The meet consists of 20 events, including 13 individual races, five relays and 2 diving events.
- The meet is the sixth of 11 regular season contests and is the final event of the fall schedule for Ohio Northern.
- Austin Veltman is now 23-23 in his sixth season as head coach of the Polar Bears.

- The Polar Bears will compete in eight events on Saturday. The seven swimming events begin with prelims at 10 am with the finals at 5:30 pm. The Diving competition will be held on campus at Wabash at 1 pm.
