Women’s Swimming and Diving places fourth at Calvin (Mich.) Quad Meet

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. — The Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team posted four top-five finishes Saturday at the Venema Aquatic Center to close out the two-day Calvin (Mich.) Quad Meet in fourth place.
The Polar Bears finished the meet with 545 points over 20 events. Calvin placed first with 1,658 points. Carthage (Wis.) was second with 767 points, and Albion (Mich.) was third with 569 points.
Sophomore Mara Brown (Fremont/Ross) led the way for ONU on Saturday, placing second in the 200-yard fly in 2:20.81 and third in the 100-yard fly in 1:02.10.
Brown was also part of ONU's fifth-place 200-yard medley team, joining senior Shelby Starkey (Bellefontaine) and freshmen Meghan Mattison (Easton, Pa.) and Gracie Smith (Findlay) in posting a time of 1:56.65.
Starkey rounded out ONU's top-five finishes on the day with a fourth-place showing in the 100-yard back with a time of 1:02.92.
The Polar Bears added four sixth-place finishes.
Mattison was sixth in the 100-yard fly in 1:03.08, Starkey was sixth in the 200-yard back in 2:16.77 and sophomore Morgan Fernandez (Huber Heights/Wayne) was sixth in the 200-yard fly in 2:31.67.
The 400-yard free relay team of Smith, Starkey, Brown and senior Gabbie Grant (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) was sixth with a time of 3:58.28.
Senior Abby Schauer (Beavercreek) was seventh in the 200-yard back in 2:19.53, and the 800-yard free relay team of Grant, Mattison, Starkey and sophomore Hannah Eversole (Cincinnati/Mount Notre Dame) finished in a tie for seventh in 8:49.05.
Northern also had four eighth-place finishes.
Schauer was eighth in the 400-yard IM in 5:06.36, Grant was eighth in the 200-yard free in 2:06.66, junior Kaitlyn Sullivan (Kettering/Fairmont) was eighth in the 1650 free in 5:55.93 and sophomore Aubrey Pritchard (Delaware/Olentangy Berlin) was eighth in the 200-yard breast in 2:42.68.
The Polar Bears return to action on Nov. 18-20 for the three-day Chicago (Ill.) Phoenix Fall Classic.
