Women’s Swimming and Diving opens season with 185-73 win over Wilmington

ADA — The Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team took first place in 12 of 14 events en route to a 185-73 win over Wilmington on Friday night at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears open the 2022-23 season at 1-0 overall and 1-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while dropping the Quakers to 0-1, 0-1.
Sophomore Mara Brown (Fremont/Ross) and freshman Grace Smith (Findlay) led the way for ONU with three victories each.
Brown won the 50-yard back in :30.18 and the 100-yard IM in 1:04.98 and joined senior Abby Schauer (Beavercreek) and sophomores Morgan Fernandez (Huber Heights/Wayne) and Annie Richters (Troy/Miami East) in winning the 200-yard medley relay in 2:02.29.
Smith won the 50-yard free in :25.81 and the 100-yard free in :57.72 and joined Richters, sophomore Sydney Selinsky (Dover/Tuscarawas Central Catholic) and senior Gabbie Grant (St. Clair Shores, Mich./Lakeview) in winning the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:47.48.
Schauer, Grant and freshman Meghan Mattison (Easton, Pa.) joined Richters with two victories on the night.
Schauer won the 50-yard breast in :33.82 in addition to her relay victory.
Grant won the 500-yard free in 5:51.89 to join her relay victory.
Mattison won a pair of individual events, placing first in the 100-yard fly in 1:02.89 and the 50-yard fly in :28.04.
Junior Kaitlyn Sullivan (Kettering/Fairmont) and sophomore Hannah Eversole (Cincinnati/Mount Notre Dame) rounded out ONU's winners on the night.
Sullivan won the 1,000-yard free in 12:16.29, and Eversole won the 200-yard free in 2:06.64.
Neither team competed in the diving events.
The Polar Bears return to action on Saturday, Oct. 29, at OAC foe John Carroll at 1 p.m.
