AKRON — Ohio Northern's Nolan Huey and Mount Union's Tyler Fry each set meet records to highlight the Day 2 of the 2018 Men's Ohio Athletic Conference Swimming & Diving Championships on Friday at the University of Akron's Ocasek Natatorium.
Huey set his second OAC record of the championships and his third ONU record in the meet with a 4:04.08 time in the 400 I.M. prelims, then shattered that mark with a 3:59.65 clocking in the finals, breaking the league and school record by more than four seconds.
Huey's record-breaking performance topped the 16-year old previous mark of 4:04.80 set in 2002 by Eric Richmond of John Carroll by a full five seconds and was nearly three seconds faster than the NCAA "B" Cut mark of 4:02.37.
Fry broke the OAC record in the 100 back with a :49.16 clocking in the prelims Friday morning. He then followed that up by winning the league title in :49.69 Friday night.
Fry topped the previous record of :50.42 set in 2017 by John Carroll's Jack Garrow. It was the second OAC title in the event for Fry as he also won in 2015 and posted runner-up finishes each of the past two years.
John Carroll is in first place with 560.5 points, Ohio Northern is second with 516.5 points, Mount Union is third with 459 points, Baldwin Wallace is fourth with 226 points and Wilmington is fifth with 213 points through 13 of the 20 events.
Ohio Northern's Pete He won a tightly contested 100 fly out of lane six, touching first in :50.27 to claim the OAC title by just .15 of a second.
John Carroll posted an impressive 1-2-3 sweep in the 200 free. Tom Pacak won his third consecutive OAC title, touching first in 1:42.03. Brian Huelsman was second in 1:43.53, Patrick Folan was third in 1:44.35. It was the first 1-2-3 sweep in the event since ONU did it in 2009.
Baldwin Wallace senior Tyler Thompson won his third consecutive title in the 100 breast, finishing in :55.08.
John Carroll's 2017 champion Ryan McClelland and Ohio Northern's 2016 champion Braden Kuhn battled to the final dive of the 1-meter diving competition. Kuhn took a 1.3-point lead after dive 10, but McClelland scored 52 points in his 11th and final dive to edge Kuhn 467.35-456.05. Both men surpassed the NCAA "B" Cut in the exciting event.
Ohio Northern got the evening started by edging John Carroll for the 200 medley relay title by .11 of a second, winning in 1:32.56.
John Carroll returned the favor in the 800 free relay at the end of the meet, winning the race in 6:53.61.
The top three finishers in each individual event and the top two relay teams earn All-Conference honors.
The final day of the three-day championships is Saturday with prelims at 10 am and finals at 5:30 pm.
