Sophomore Jill Chapman sets two school records, tops NCAA cuts to lead Women's Swimming & Diving on Day 1 of Wooster Invitational

WOOSTER — Sophomore Jill Chapman set two school records and surpassed the NCAA "B" Cut in both events to lead the Ohio Northern women's swimming and diving team on the first day of the 3-day Wooster Invitational Thursday at the Wooster High School Natatorium.
The Polar Bears are seventh of 10 teams with 242.5 points after five of the 20 events.
NCAA Division II Gannon (Pa.) leads the meet with 458.5 points, host Wooster is second with 333 points and Division II Edinboro (Pa.) is third with 312 points.
Chapman won the 50 free in :23.22, setting a Wooster Invitational meet record and the ONU school record in the process.
She also surpassed the NCAA "B" Cut of :23.89 and is less than one half second off the NCAA "A" Cut of :22.89.
Her time shatters the previous record of :24.08 set in 2009 by Alison Garbash.
Chapman began the meet by swimming the anchor leg of the 200 free relay team, which finished second in a school record 1:35.89.
That time is .21 of a second better than the NCAA "B" Cut of 1:36.10
Sophomore Emily Uhrin, junior Allison Lohnes and freshman Sydney Veon joined Champan in the record-setting performance.
The time was 1.62 seconds fater the the mark of 1:37.51 set last year by the OAC Champion squad of Uhrin, Chapman, Lohnes and junior Lindsey Inkrott.
Lohnes also posted a solid sixth place finish in the 200 I.M. in 2:12.86.
The 400 medley relay team of Inkrott, Veon, Lohnes and Chapman touched fifth in 3:55.19.
The second day of the three-day meet will be held on Friday with prelims beginning at 10 am and finals at 6 pm.
