Wrestling posts highest team GPA in country, has 13 named Scholar All-America by National Wrestling Coaches Association

ADA — The Ohio Northern wrestling team enjoyed elite status as the National Wrestling Coaches Association announced its annual Scholar All-America honors for 2024-25.
ONU earned Scholar All-America Team honors, posting the highest GPA among NCAA Division III schools with an impressive 3.899.
The Polar Bears also had 13 student-athletes named NCAA Division III Scholar All-Americans.
Fifth-year senior Jadon Brownlee (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), seniors Adam Myers (Springfield/Shawnee), Colin Mellott (Wapakoneta), Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.), Jacob Reed (Lancaster), Cael Vanderhorst (Covington) and Teagan Hendricks (Jamestown/Greenview), junior Gabe Hansen (Richwood/North Union), sophomore Flint Guerra (Lebanon) and freshmen Myles Johnson (Springboro), Chase Vanderhorst (Covington), Casper Caizzo (Norwalk/St. Paul) and Jovanni Greco (Ross) were among 462 individuals from 101 institutions to receive the award.
Myers, Reed and Hendricks all earned NWCA Scholar All-American honors for the fourth consecutive season.
Myers is a two-time All-Conference honoree, earning First Team honors in 2024 and Second Team honors this season. He is also a two-time Academic All-OAC selection. This season, he posted a 20-11 record at 174 pounds and went 2-2 at the NCAA III Championships.
He now has a career mark of 88-45 with 20 pins.
Reed is a three-time All-American and a four-year qualifier for the NCAA Championships.
This season, Reed was 32-3 with 19 pins. He is a four-time First Team All-Conference honoree and a two-time Academic All-OAC award winner.
In four seasons at ONU, Reed boasts an 148-10 record (second all-time in ONU history) with 63 pins.
Hendricks is a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier and is a two-time Academic All-OAC selection. This year, he was 33-15 with 9 pins at 165 pounds.
In four years at ONU, he is 113-45 overall with 39 pins.
Mellott, Layman and Cael Vanderhorst are all three-time NWCA Scholar All-Americans.
Mellott is a two-time Academic All-OAC honoree, finishing this season with a record of 25-16 with 5 pins. He is 100-60 in his ONU career.
Layman is a three-time NCAA Championships qualifier. He is also a three-time All-OAC selection and a two-time Academic All-OAC selection.
This season, Layman went 30-9 with 5 pins at 197 pounds. He is 124-53 overall in four seasons at ONU.
Cael Vanderhorst was named First-Team All-OAC and qualified for the NCAA III Championships this season, going 29-11 with 9 pins.
In his career, he is 77-26 overall with 24 pins.
Brownlee went 17-8 with 12 pins this season.
In five years at ONU, he is 93-66 with 40 pins.
Hansen went 32-10 this season with 6 pins and 15 tech falls.
In three years at Ohio Northern, he is now 65-34 with 10 pins and 24 tech falls.
Guerra went 15-6 with 2 pins at 165 pounds in his second season at Ohio Northern.
He is now 33-14 with 12 pins in his career.
Johnson was named First Team All-OAC and qualified for the NCAA III Championships in his first season as a Polar Bear, going 39-6 with 9 pins and a team-best 17 tech falls.
Chase Vanderhorst went 20-14 with 5 pins in his first season at ONU.
Caizzo completed his first season with a 27-6 record including 12 pins.
Greco went 22-4 in his first season with 4 pins and 7 tech falls.
The Polar Bears finished 16-7 in dual meets and were second in the OAC with a 6-1 record in 2024-25, finishing the season ranked No. 16 in the NWCA Tournament Poll and No. 24 in the NWCA Dual Poll under 37th-year head coach Ron Beaschler.
