No. 12 Wrestling fifth of 32 after first day of Wheaton (Ill.) Pete Willson Invitational
WHEATON, Ill. — Five Ohio Northern wrestlers are still competing and are guaranteed a top-eight finish in their respective weight classes after the first day of the Wheaton (Ill.) Pete Willson Invitational on Friday.
The No. 12-ranked Polar Bears are in fifth place out of 32 teams with 63 team points. No. 3 Wisconsin-LaCrosse leads the team standings with 88 points. No. 11 Wisconsin-Whitewater is second with 83.5 points, No. 6 Wisconsin-Eau Claire is third with 83 points and Messiah (Pa.) is fourth with 74 points.
ONU is ahead of No. 4 North Central (Ill.), No. 12 Olivet (Mich.), No. 14 Millikin (Ill.) and No. 23 Concordia (Minn.)

ONU Individuals
- Junior All-American and No. 1-ranked Jacob Reed (Canal Winchester/Lancaster) was 3-0 with two pins and a tech fall to reach the semifinals in the 141-pound weight class.
- Junior Colin Mellott (Wapakoneta) went 3-1 with two pins and a tech fall to reach the consolation quarterfinals at 125.
- Junior Teagan Hendricks (Jamestown/Greenview) advanced to the consolation quarterfinals at 165 with a 2-1 record, which inlcuded one pin.
- The busiest Polar Bear of Day 1 was senior Jadon Brownlee (Powell/Olentangy Liberty), who went 4-1 at Heavyweight to reach the consolation quarterfinals.
- Junior Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.), who is seeded No. 2, was 2-1 with a tech fall at 184, and is also in the consolation quarterfinals.
