Reed named OAC Wrestler of the Year to lead list of 5 Polar Bears earning All-OAC accolades

ADA — Sophomore Jacob Reed (Lancaster) was named the John Summa Wrestler of the Year in the Ohio Athletic Conference, highlighting a list of five Ohio Northern student-athletes who were named All-OAC for the 2022-23 season in voting conducted by the league's head coaches.
Joining Reed on the All-OAC First Team were fifth-year senior Jordan Hardrick (Dayton/Wayne) and sophomore Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.). Seniors Chase Sumner (Ada) and Logan Painter (Marysville/Early College) earned Second Team accolades.
Reed, a 2022 All-American at 141 pounds, is now a two-time All-OAC honoree after earning Second Team honors a year ago when he was named the D3wrestle.com Freshman of the Year.
Currently ranked No. 2 nationally at 141 pounds, Reed is a perfect 36-0 on the season, including 7-0 in the OAC, with 15 pins, one technical fall and a team-high 10 major decisions. He is looking to become just the fourth wrestler in program history to complete an undefeated season.
In two seasons at ONU, Reed is 79-5 overall for a .940 winning percentage and has 28 pins, one technical fall and 18 major decisions.
The OAC Wrestler of the Year award is named after John Summa, who served as the head wrestling coach at Baldwin Wallace from 1948 to 1980. While at BW, Summa compiled a 201-140-1 overall record and went 105-38-1 in the conference with six OAC championships.
Hardrick is a five-year starter at 165 pounds and is now a three-time All-OAC honoree after earning Second Team accolades as a sophomore and senior.
Ranked No. 8 nationally at 165 pounds, Hardrick is 37-5 on the season with two pins, eight major decisions and a team-best nine technical falls. In five seasons at ONU, he has a 112-42 record with 10 pins, 18 technical falls and 19 major decisions. His 112 victories rank ninth in program history.
Layman, a two-year starter at 184 pounds, is 30-5 this season with 11 falls, three technical falls and five major decisions.
In two seasons at ONU, he is 54-29 overall with 15 falls, three technical falls and eight major decisions.
Sumner, a two-time NCAA qualifier and three-year starter at 149 pounds, is now a two-time All-OAC honoree after earning the accolade as a sophomore. Ranked No. 9 nationally at 149 pounds, he owns a 33-3 record with a team-best 16 falls to go with five technical falls and three major decisions this season.
In four seasons at ONU, Sumner is 91-15 overall for an .858 winning percentage and has 40 falls, nine technical falls and 18 major decisions.
Painter is 26-14 at 285 pounds this season, tallying 13 pins, two technical falls and three major decisions.
In four seasons at ONU, Painter is 56-47 overall with 25 pins, three technical falls and four major decisions.
The Polar Bears went 20-3 in dual meets this season and were second in the OAC regular-season standings with a 6-1 record.
Ranked No. 13 nationally in the NWCA Tournament Team Poll and No. 16 in the NWCA Dual Poll, Ohio Northern returns to action on Saturday and Sunday in the NCAA Division III Central Regional Championships in Cleveland.
