Three win weight class titles to lead No. 18 Wrestling to team crown at Mid-States Invitational

OLIVET, Mich. — No. 18-ranked Ohio Northern wrestling team won three individual weight class titles, leading the Polar Bears to the team title at the Mid-States Invitational on Saturday at Olivet's Cutler Event Center.
Ohio Northern (20-3 overall) scored 164 points, despite resting eight starters, to edge Wabash (Ind.) by nine points.
Host Olivet (Mich.) was third with 110 points and Trine (Ind.) was fourth with 92.5 points.
Sophomores Jayden Jones (Ashland) and Cael Vanderhorst (Covington) and freshman Colton Spurgeon (Mount Vernon) all won their respective weight classes with 3-0 records for ONU.
Jones won the 157-pound weight class, Vanderhorst won at 149 and Spurgeon won at 141.
The Polar Bears also had five runner-up finishes.
Senior Camden Spears (Plainfield, Ind.) was second at 133, senior Logan Painter (Marysville/Early College) was second at heavyweight, sophomore Colin Mellott (Wapakoneta) was second at 125, freshman Jackson Hawker (Perrysburg) at 157 and freshman Ajay Locke (Lancaster) was second at 197.
Northern finished 2-3-4 at Heavyweight, as junior Jadon Brownlee (Powell/Olentangy Liberty) was second and freshman Tarez Russell (Lima/Elida) was third.
Junior Ross Rayfield (Delta) placed fifth at 149 and freshman Gabe Hansen (Richwood/North Union) placed sixth at 133.
The Polar Bears will return to action on Feb. 25-26 at the NCAA III Central Regionals at Case Western Reserve.
