Sumner places second at 149 to lead No. 18 Wrestling to third-place finish at Baldwin Wallace Invitational

BEREA — Senior Chase Sumner (Ada) led the No. 18 Ohio Northern wrestling team to a third-place finish at the 36th annual Baldwin Wallace John Summa Invitational on Saturday at Lou Higgins Center Fieldhouse.
The Polar Bears (19-3 overall), who were resting several starters, finished with 174 points in the 10-team tournament. NCAA Division II West Liberty (W.Va.) won the team title with 381 points, and No. 4 Baldwin Wallace finished second with 359 points.
Ranked No. 10 nationally at 149 pounds, Sumner finished second in his weight class, going 3-1 with two wins by pin. He was defeated via a 4-0 decision by top-ranked Michael Petrella of Baldwin Wallace in the championship match.
Sumner is now 32-3 on the season with a team-leading 16 pins.
The Polar Bears finished with nine additional placers at the tournament.
Sophomore Teagan Hendricks (Jamestown/Greenview) and senior Logan Painter (Marysville/Early College) placed third at 157 and 285, respectively.
Sophomore Cael Vanderhorst (Covington) and senior Ben DePrest (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) posted fifth-place showings at 149 and 197, respectively.
Sophomores Jayden Jones (Ashland), Adam Myers (Springfield/Shawnee) and Zach Dabney (Lake Villa, Ill./Warren Township) placed sixth at 157, 174 and 184, respectively.
Seniors Camden Spears (Plainfield, Ind.) and Bailey Gibson (Elida) placed seventh at 133 and 157, respectively.
The Polar Bears return to action on Tuesday to close out their Ohio Athletic Conference schedule at Otterbein at 7 p.m.
