No. 16 Wrestling defeats No. 20 John Carroll and Muskingum, falls to No. 5 Baldwin Wallace in OAC quad meet

ADA — The 16th-ranked Ohio Northern wrestling team went 2-1 in Saturday's OAC quad meet at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears (19-3 overall, 5-1 OAC) won 49-0 over Muskingum (4-7, 1-5) and 37-13 over No. 20 John Carroll (9-3, 4-2) and fell 34-10 to No. 5 Baldwin Wallace (15-2, 5-0).
The Yellow Jackets went 3-0 in the event. The Blue Streaks were 1-2, and the Fighting Muskies were 0-3.
Three Polar Bears posted perfect 3-0 marks in the quad.
No.2-ranked sophomore All-American Jacob Reed (Lancaster) was 3-0 with a pin and a major decision at 141 pounds as he improved to 35-0 on the season.
Sophomore Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.) was 3-0 with two technical falls at 184 pounds, and fifth-year senior Jordan Hardrick (Dayton/Wayne) was 3-0 with a technical fall at 165.
Three other Polar Bears posted 2-1 marks on the day.
Sophomore Cael Vanderhorst (Covington) was 2-1 with a pin and a major decision at 149 pounds, senior Ben DePrest (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) was 2-1 with a pin and a major decision at 197, and freshman Jackson Hawker (Perrysburg) was 2-1 at 174.
In their opening match against Baldwin Wallace, the Polar Bears scored via a 10-1 major decision from Reed at 141 pounds, an 8-3 decision from Hardrick at 165 and a 3-0 decision from Layman at 184.
Against Muskingum, ONU earned five victories via Muskie forfeits. Sophomore Dylan Le (Powell/Dublin Scioto) added a pin at 133 to go with an 8-0 major decision from Vanderhorst at 149, a 16-0 technical fall from Layman at 184 and a 10-2 major decision from DePrest at 197.
John Carroll opened with victories by forfeit and decision for a 9-0 lead over ONU, but pins from Reed and Vanderhorst gave the Polar Bears the lead.
A major decision from No. 15-ranked Patrick McGraw at 157 pounds put JCU up 13-12, but ONU closed by winning the final five bouts.
The closing stretch was highlighted by pins from DePrest and senior Logan Painter (Marysville/Early College) and technical falls from Hardrick and Layman.
The Polar Bears return to action on Jan. 27-28 at the Wheaton (Ill.) Invitational.
