Caprella, Sumner, Reed qualify for NCAA Championships with top-three finishes at NCAA III Central Regionals

ADRIAN, Mich. — Senior Schuyler Caprella (Bluffton/Allen East) won the 157-pound weight class title, while junior Chase Sumner (Ada) and freshman Jacob Reed (Canal Winchester/Lancaster) posted second place finishes at the 2022 NCAA Division III Adrian Regionals on Friday-Saturday at the Merrilat Center.
All three wrestlers qualified for the NCAA Division III Championships March 11-12 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
Caprella (35-12) finished with a perfect 4-0 record and will be making his first appearance at the Championships.
Sumner went 3-1 and fell in the finals at 149 pounds. He improves to 16-4 on the season and is now a two-time NCAA Championships qualifier.
Reed was 3-1 and reached the finals at 141 pounds. Reed will enter the NCAA Championships with a team-best 38-4 record.
Four other Polar Bears placed in the top eight of their respective weight classes.
Senior Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) came one match away from qualifying for the NCAAs, but he fell 4-3 in the third place match at 197 and finished the tournament with a 3-2 record.
Senior Jordan Hardrick (Dayton/Wayne) placed fifth at 165 and junior Ben DePrest (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) and freshmen Dylan Le (Powell/Dublin Scioto) placed seventh at 285 and 133, respectively.
Ohio Northern finished fourth out of 20 teams in the team standings with 117.5 points. No. 3-ranked Wabash was first with 168.5 points, No. 5 Baldwin Wallace was third with 145.5 points and No. 22 John Carroll was third with 141 points.
The top three placers in each weight class qualified for the NCAA Championships.
