Wrestling takes second place at Mid-States Invitational

ADA — Freshman Cael Vanderhorst (Covington) won the 141-pound weight class to lead the Ohio Northern wrestling team to a second-place finish in the eight-team field at the Mid-States Invitational at the ONU Sports Center on Saturday.
The Polar Bears finished with 99.5 points. No. 3 Wabash (Ind.) won the event with 193 points. No. 12 Mount Saint Joseph was third with 91 points, No. 20 Olivet (Mich.) was fourth with 78.5 points and Heidelberg was fifth with 56 points.
Despite resting most of its starters, Ohio Northern had nine wrestlers place in their respective weight classes, led by Vanderhorst's first-place finish at 141.
Freshmen Jayden Jones (Ashland) and Teagan Hendricks (Jamestown/Greenview) placed second at 149 and 157, respectively.
Freshman Adam Myers (Springfield/STEM Academy) and junior Ben DePrest (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) added third-place finishes at 174 and 285, respectively.
Sophomore Adam Dillon (Lebanon) placed fourth at 174, and freshman Cody Kaufman (New Alexandria/Greensburg Salem) placed fifth at 149.
Junior Noah Williamson (Conklin, Mich./Coopersville) and freshman Zac Dabney (Lake Villa, Ill./Warren Township) rounded out ONU's placers with sixth-place finishes at 165 and 184, respectively.
The Polar Bears return to action on Feb. 25-26 at the NCAA Division III Central Regionals at Adrian, Mich., where the top three placers in each of the 10 weight classes qualify for the NCAA Championships on March 11-12 at Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
