Wrestling gets three first period pins, holds off late charge to defeat No. 12 Mount Saint Joseph 29-19

ADA — Junior Logan Painter (Marysville/Early College) was one of three Ohio Northern wrestlers to get a first period pin, leading ONU to a 29-19 victory over No. 12-ranked Mount Saint Joseph on Tuesday at the ONU Sports Center Fieldhouse.

The Polar Bears (7-3 overall) won six of the 10 bouts to post their seventh consecutive dual meet victory.

The Lions fall to 3-6 in dual meets this season.

Freshman Colin Mellott (Wapakoneta) got ONU off to a 3-0 lead with a 4-1 decision at 125 pounds.

In a bout of Central Region-ranked wrestlers, freshman Jacob Reed (Canal Winchester/Lancaster) edged Desmond Diggs 4-0. Reed is ranked 14th nationally and third in the Central Region, while Diggs is ranked sixth in the Central Region.

Junior Chase Sumner (Ada) made it 12-3 Polar Bears with a first period pin in 1:11 at 149.

Senior Schuyler Caprella (Bluffton/Allen East) got a first period tech fall at 157 to put Northern ahead 17-3.

Senior Jordan Hardrick (Dayton/Wayne) made it four consecutive victories with a first period pin in 1:04 at 165 pounds, giving ONU a 23-3 lead.

Mount Saint Joseph came roaring back with three straight victories, two pins and a major decision, to claw back within 23-19 heading into the heavyweight bout.

But junior Logan Painter (Marysville/Early College) got a first period pin in 1:18 to seal the victory for Ohio Northern.

The Polar Bears will return to action Friday and Saturday at the Lycoming (Pa.) Budd Whitehill Duals.
