Wrestling rallies from 12-0 deficit to post 24-15 victory at No. 22 Mount Union

ADA — Senior Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) won by fall at 197 pounds and junior Ben DePrest (Louisville, Ky./Saint Xavier) won by forfeit at 285 to rally Ohio Northern to a 24-15 victory at No. 22-ranked Mount Union on Tuesday at The MAAC.

The Polar Bears (6-3 overall, 2-0 Ohio Athletic Conference) won six of the 10 bouts to post their sixth consecutive dual meet victory.

The Purple Raiders (1-5, 0-2) won the first three bouts as nationally-ranked wrestlers Jack Stanley, David Massey and Jordin James won by major decision, tech fall and decision to lead 12-0.

The most anticipated bout of the evening lived up to its billing as No. 9-ranked James edged ONU's undefeated freshman Jacob Reed (Canal Winchester/Lancaster) 8-3.

Sophomore Matt Dewitz (Oak Harbor) got a second period escape and rode out the entire two-minute third period to post a 3-2 victory at 149 pounds to get ONU on the board.

Senior Schuyler Caprella (Bluffton/Allen East) used two second period near falls to win 4-0 at 157 pounds and get Northern within 12-6.

Senior Jordan Hardrick (Dayton/Wayne) made it three consecutive victories with a 3-2 decision at 165 pounds. He got a first period takedown and a third period escape for the decision to make it 12-9.

Mount won at 174 to go up 15-9 and freshman Gavin Layman (Chesterton, Ind.) followed with a 7-2 win at 184 to get the visitors within 15-12.

The Polar Bears will return to action on Saturday when they host the 40th Annual ONU Invitational.
