Wrestling gets first period pins from Connor Kwiat, Cash Thompson in 26-18 victory over Heidelberg

ADA — Ohio Northern got first period falls from sophomore Connor Kwiat (Bloomville/Tiffin Calvert) and junior Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) to post a 26-18 Ohio Athletic Conference wrestling win over Heidelberg on Thursday evening at the ONU Sports Center.
The Polar Bears (12-6 overall, 1-2 OAC) also clinched a winning season with the victory.
The Student Princes (3-8, 1-1) won the opening match by fall to grab a 6-0 lead.
Senior Seth Transue (Plain City/Jerome) posted his 17th consecutive victory with a 6-2 decision at 133, improving his record to 28-2 this year.
In the premier match of the evening, No. 24-ranked senior Jeff Andrews (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) got a takedown and four nearfall points to post an 8-2 decision over No. 22 Hayden Bates at 141 pounds to tie the match at 6-6.
No. 16-ranked freshman Chase Sumner (Ada) followed with an 8-3 decision at 149 for his 14th consecutive win to give the Polar Bears a 9-6 advantage.
Sophomore Shaun Wagner (Southington, Conn.) then posted a 19-1 tech fall victory at 157 to extend the Northern lead to 14-6.
After an HU decision at 165, sophomore Connor Kwiat (Bloomville/Tiffin Calvert) got a first period fall at 174 to put ONU ahead 20-9.
The Student Princes got a first period fall at 184, but junior Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) answered with his team-leading 11th pin of the season at 197 in just 52 seconds to clinch the match for Ohio Northern.
The Polar Bears will send a squad of reserves to the Alma (Mich.) Open on Saturday and the varsity will return to action Jan. 25 at the OAC Quad Meets at Mount Union.
