WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The Ohio Northern wrestling team finished 2-1 in Pool D on the first day of the Lycoming (Pa.) Budd Whitehill National Duals with a 20-19 victory over No. 23-ranked Castleton (Vt.), a 24-14 victory over Wilkes (Pa.) and a 24-20 loss to No. 25 Washington & Lee (Va.) on Friday.
The Polar Bears (10-5 overall) finished second in Pool D and will battle on Saturday with the second place finishers in the three other pools for places 5-8.
ONU will face Cortland State (N.Y.) at 10:30 am and then will face either Springfield (Mass.) or Wisconsin-Stevens Point at 1:30 pm.
Against Castleton, the Polar Bears won the first five weight classes to build a 20-0 lead, then held on as the Spartans (6-3) won the final five bouts.
Freshman Jacob Hamad (Sagamore Hills/Nordonia) won by a first period fall at 125 pounds to get ONU off to a 6-0 lead.
No. 23-ranked senior Seth Transue (Plain City/Jerome) won by major decision at 133 and senior Jeff Andrews (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) followed with a decision at 141 to make it 13-0.
No. 16-ranked freshman Chase Sumner (Ada) won 3-1 at 149 and sophomore Shaun Wagner (Southington, Conn.) got a major decision at 157 to extend the lead to 20-0.
Castleton won the next four bouts to get within 20-16 entering the final match at heavyweight.
ONU freshman Logan Painter (Marysville/Early Colllege), who normally competes at 197 pounds, wrestled up a weight class needing a win or a loss by decision to give Ohio Northern the dual meet victory.
Painter did just that, falling 4-2 in sudden victory, holding CU to just three points in the decision and giving the Polar Bears a 20-19 victory.
Against the Generals (7-2), the two teams each won five bouts, but WL had three pins, while ONU got one pin from No. 19-ranked junior Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood).
Sumner and sophomore Connor Kwiat (Bloomville/Tiffin Calvert) each posted major decisions and Transue and Andrews each won by decision.
