CINCINNATI — The Ohio Northern wrestling team got off to a fast start and never looked back Tuesday in its dual at Mount St. Joseph. With the help of a couple pins from freshmen Sam Medlen (Westfield, Ind.) and Chase Sumner (Ada), the Polar Bears toppled the Lions 27-17 to improve to 8-4 on the season.
Freshman Camden Spears (Plainfield, Ind.) jumpstarted ONU at 125. He scored two first-period takedowns en route to defeating Tariq Hornbuckle via disqualification.
Senior Seth Transue (Plain City/Jerome) logged takedowns in all three periods to score an 8-3 decision over Amar Thomas at 133. Senior Jeff Andrews (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) utilized a similar path, recording takedowns in the first and second periods, to register a 7-3 decision over Nathaniel McClanahan at 141.
Sumner, at 149, provided the match's first fall. He pinned Chase Haehnle in 1:39, giving the Polar Bears a commanding 18-0 lead.
Sophomore Jordan Hardrick (Huber Heights/Wayne) earned first- and second-period takedowns en route to a 9-3 decision over Austin Belcher at 165.
Medlin put the finishing touches on the win in style. He needed just 54 seconds to pin Tristan Faworski at 184, which gave Northern a 27-8 advantage.
