WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — The Ohio Northern wrestling program concluded their stay at the 31st annual Lycoming (Pa.) Budd Whitehill National Duals posting a 1-1 record after falling to Castleton (Vt.) 31-16 and defeating Southern Virginia 26-22 on Saturday inside Lamade Gymnasium in Williamsport, Pennsylvania.
With the results, Northern finishes the event with a 1-4 mark over the weekend, moving them to 5-6 overall in dual matches in the 2018-19 season.
Due to their victory against Southern Virginia, the program would also end 15th among the 16-team field.
Senior Dylan Dolph (Canton/South) and sophomore Cash Thompson (Lake Odessa, Mich./Lakewood) each registered a pin and 2-0 records to help guide the Ohio Northern efforts Saturday. The former would add a decision while the latter also claimed a major decision wrestling up a weight class at 197.
Just one day removed from surpassing the 100 career wins plateau, senior Clayton Davidson (Kirtland) emerged victorious in his two bouts on the competition's final day. He would record a major decision and a 5-2 decision Saturday, moving him into 11th on the program's all-time wins list with 103 career victories.
Junior Jeff Andrews (New Baltimore, Mich./Anchor Bay) would also compile a 2-0 record with a tech fall and a forfeit. With his second-day efforts, Andrews finishes the tournament with a perfect 5-0 record.
Freshman Shaun Wagner (Southington, Conn.) picked up the remaining Polar Bear win, pinning Southern Virginia's Easton Whitaker in his lone bout on the day.
In their opening dual against Castleton (Vt.), Ohio Northern would outscore the Spartans 16-13 in the seven matchups contested following three forfeited weight classes for the Polar Bears at 125, 133, and 141. Andrews would kick off the action on the mat with his fourth victory this weekend via a tech fall (16-0) at 149 while Dolph claimed a tight-knit, 2-1 decision at 157 for a second straight ONU triumph. After Castleton responded with back-to-back wins of their own, Davidson earned a 5-2 decision at 184, and Thompson notched a pin in 2:58 at 197 to round out the Polar Bear victories in the first dual Saturday morning.
Ohio Northern would go on to claim five of the six contested bouts against Southern Virginia Saturday afternoon, bouncing back from an early 12-0 deficit through three weight classes due to forfeits. Wagner, Andrews, and Dolph rattled off three consecutive bonus-point victories at 149, 157, and 165, respectively, providing the Polar Bears with an 18-12 cushion. The Knights would answer back with a major decision at 174, but Davidson and Thompson prevented the comeback with a pair of major decisions to conclude the action on the mat.
The Polar Bears are slated to return to action this Tuesday evening, January 15, when they host OAC foe Muskingum at 7 p.m. inside the ONU Sports Center in their final home event of the season.
