No. 10 Wrestling opens season with 3-1 record at Olivet (Mich.) Duals

OLIVET, Mich. — The No. 10-ranked Ohio Northern wrestling team opened its 2012-13 season with a 3-1 record at the Olivet Duals on Saturday at the Cutler Events Center.

The Polar Bears defeated No. 12-ranked Olivet (Mich.) 26-15, Alma (Mich.) 20-15 and Trine (Ind.) 25-12 after opening the day with a 39-3 loss to No. 5 Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Senior three-time All-American, defending NCAA Champion and No. 1-ranked Kyle Kwiat led ONU with a perfect 4-0 record, going 3-0 at 174 pounds and 1-0 at 184 pounds.

Kwiat knocked off No. 7 Ryan Piper of Trine by decision and posted a pair of tech falls on the day.

Junior Michael Pawlitz posted a 3-0 record at 197 pounds, sophomore Cody Lovejoy went 2-0 at heavyweight and freshman Max Brooke went 2-0 at 157 pounds for ONU.

Pawlitz had the biggest upset of the tournament for Ohio Northern, defeating No. 10-ranked Logan Renas of Olivet 6-4.

ONU used different lineups in all four matches and 21 different wrestlers saw varsity action on the day.

The Polar Bears will return to action Dec. 1 when they host the annual ONU Invitational at the ONU Sports Center.
