Freshman Cody Lovejoy's victory leads No. 24 Wrestling past No. 7 Cortland State (N.Y.) 20-19 at Lycoming Duals
WILLIAMSPORT, Pa. — Freshman Cody Lovejoy posted a 2-1 victory in the heavyweight bout to give No. 24 Ohio Northern a 20-19 victory over No. 7 SUNY Cortland (N.Y.) in the third-place match at the Bud Whitehill tournament Saturday afternoon.
Ohio Northern (8-4) was seeded No. 7 in the tournament, while Cortland (13-2) was the No. 1 seed overall.
Trailing 19-17 entering the final match of the meet, Lovejoy won 2-1 to earn the win and give the Polar Bears the victory and a third-place finish overall
Freshman Cole Cochran put the Polar Bears on the board winning a 5-0 decision in the 125-pound weight class.
Cortland proceeded to win the next three matches, giving the Red Dragons a 13-3 lead going into the 157-pound match.
A 3:49 pin by senior Mick Letcher (157), a decision by senior and No. 5-ranked Billy Painter (165), and a technical fall by junior All-Ameican and No. 3-ranked Kyle Kwiat (174) gave Ohio Northern a 17-13 lead with three matches to go.
Victories at 184 and 197 gave the Red Dragons a 19-17 lead going into the heavyweight match.
The No. 24 Polar Bears will return to action on Tuesday, at No. 14 Mount Union.
