Women's Lacrosse opens home schedule with 16-12 victory over Kalamazoo (Mich.)

ADA — Senior Keaghan Burden (Brunswick) and junior Emma Hoersten (Hilliard/Davidson) each scored 5 goals as the Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team won its home opener against Kalamazoo (Mich.) 16-12 on a sunny and cold Saturday afternoon.

The Basics

The Game

• Burden earned her seventh career hat trick and finished with 6 points on 5 goals, and 1 assist. 
• Hoersten posted her ninth career hat trick and finished with 6 points on 5 goals, and 1 assist.
• Junior Lydia Lehman (West Chester/Lakota West) got her second career hat trick and finished with 5 points, 3 goals and 2 assists. 
• Kalamazoo would score the first goal of the game, but the Polar Bears would go on a 4-0 run to stretch the lead to 4-1 at 6:21.
• The he Polar Bears led 8-4 at halftime.
• Both teams traded goals throughout the 3rd period but ONU led a close one 12-10 heading into the 4th. 
• KC would score the opening goal in the 4th but then the Polar Bears scored 3 straight to grab a 15-11 lead at the 6:34 mark.
• Sophomore Jenna Messinger (Springboro) and freshman Kara Fox (South Euclid/Notre Dame-Cathedral Latin) each had 2 saves in goal to help the Polar Bears get the win. 
• Ella Spooner had 4 goals and Tessa Fuller had 2 goals and 4 assists for the Hornets.
• ONU out-shot KC 33-22 and had the ground ball advantage 20-16.

• The Polar Bears had 3 players with hat tricks. 
• Burden leads the team this season with 6 goals and 7 points.
• Junior Elena Martin (Canfield) leads the team with 12 draw controls.
• Burden is first all-time in Ohio Northern history with 165 career points. She is also ONU's all-time career leader with 94 assists and is seventh with 71 career goals.
• Hoersten has the ONU career record in free position goals with 28.
• Head coach Margo Vandeveld is in her second season at Ohio Northern and has a 10-9 record, a winning percentage of .526.
