UNIVERSITY HEIGHTS — Freshman Elena Martin (Canfield) scored three goals to lead the Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team in a 20-8 loss to John Carroll on Saturday at Don Shula Stadium.
The Blue Streaks improve to 4-5 overall and 2-0 in the Ohio Athletic Conference while dropping the Polar Bears to 6-5, 0-2.
Martin recorded her fifth hat trick of the season, and senior Meredith Miller (Noblesville, Ind.) and freshman Emma Hoersten (Hilliard/Davidson) tallied two goals each.
Sophomore Keaghan Burden (Brunswick) scored Northern's remaining goal.
Olivia Gerlach scored four goals to lead JCU, and Mary Doherty, Lainey Donalson and Kendall Gessner had three goals each. Gessner added three assists for a team-high six points.
The start of the game was delayed by 1 hour and 15 minutes due to lightning.
Donalson got the Blue Streaks on the scoreboard with a goal just 48 seconds into the game, but Martin answered to tie the score with 9:29 left in the first quarter.
After another JCU goal, Martin again tied the score with 8:03 left in the opening period, but the Blue Streaks ended the quarter on a 3-0 run for a 5-2 lead.
