ADA — Senior Meredith Miller (Noblesville, Ind.) scored a season-high five goals to lead the Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team in a 20-7 loss to Mount Union in the Ohio Athletic Conference opener on a beautiful Sunday afternoon at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears fall to 5-4 overall and are 0-1 in the OAC, while the Purple Raiders improve to 5-1, 1-0.
Freshman Rylie Kocik (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) and sophomore Keaghan Burden (Brunswick) also scored goals and senior Amanda Wells (Mason) added two assists and four draw controls for ONU.
MtU was led by Julia Bates with seven goals and an assist for eight points.
Mount Union scored the first six goals of the game before Miller got Northern on the board with a free position goal with one second left in the first quarter.
The visitors would get the next five goals to lead 11-1 when Miller scored with 1:56 left in the half and it was 11-2 at intermission.
Ohio Northern went on a 4-1 run in the third quarter to claw back within 14-6 with 2:38 left in the period, but the Purple Raiders would score six of the game's final seven goals to put the game away.
MtU out-shot ONU 39-17, won the ground ball battle 23-12 and the turnover battle 16-13.
The Polar Bears will return to action Wednesday with a 7 pm non-conference contest at Anderson (Ind.)
