ADA — The Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team is off to its best start in school history after a 13-6 victory over Adrian (Mich.) on a chilly Wednesday night at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
The Polar Bears improve to 4-0, surpassing the previous best start of 3-0 accomplished by the 2020 squad.
Freshman Rylie Kocik (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse) had her fourth consecutive hat trick and freshman Elena Martin (Canfield) had seven draw controls and four ground balls for ONU.
AC (3-1) was led by Melaina Springer with three goals.
Northern scored three goals in a 41-second span early in the game to lead 3-1 with just 5:37 gone in the contest.
A fourth goal at the 9:38 mark of the second quarter gave the hosts a 4-1 advantage.
The Bulldogs answered with a pair of goals sandwiched around a goal by freshman Emma Hoersten (Hilliard/Davidson), to get within 5-3 midway through the second.
Senior Meredith Miller (Noblesville, Ind.), Kocik and Hoersten would score consecutive goals to extend Northern's lead to 8-3.
The Polar Bear defense would limit Adrian to just six shots and two goals in the second half.
Sophomore Keaghan Burden (Brunswick) had two goals and a game-high four assists for Ohio Northern.
Junior Chloe Millican (Fishers, Ind./Hamilton Southeastern) had four saves in goal for the Polar Bears to pick up the win.
ONU out-shot AC 39-13 and forced the Bulldogs into 36 turnovers.
The Polar Bears will wrap up their season-opening 5-game homestand on Saturday with a 1 pm contest against Ohio Wesleyan.
