ADA — The Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team opened its 2023 season on Saturday afternoon with an 18-15 victory over Kalamazoo (Mich.) on a cool and sunny day at Dial-Roberson Stadium.
Four different players had hat tricks for the Polar Bears (1-0 overall), led by a four-goal effort from freshman Rylie Kocik (Cicero, N.Y./Cicero-North Syracuse).
Senior Meredith Miller (Noblesville, Ind.) and freshmen Emma Hoersten (Hilliard/Davidson) and Elena Martin (Canfield) each had three goals for ONU.
Sophomore Keaghan Burden (Brunswick) had a team-high six points on two goals and four assists for the hosts.
The Hornets (1-1) were led by Abbie Caza with six goals.
KC led 8-5 with 4:23 left in the first half, but Ohio Northern would score eight of the next 10 gold to go ahead 13-10 with 7:04 left in the third quarter.
A 5-0 Polar Bear run, sparked by a pair of goals from Kocik and Hoersten, expanded the lead to 18-12 with 9:10 remaining in the game.
Ohio Northern out-shot Kalamazoo 38-31, enjoyed a 30-24 advantage in ground balls and forced 27 turnovers while committing only 20.
The Polar Bears will open their season with a 5-game home stand and will continue on Wednesday with a 7 pm contest against Trine (Ind.)
