Wells, Kilgore, Burden tally 3 goals each as Women’s Lacrosse falls 15-13 to Southwestern (Tex.)

GEORGETOWN, Tex. — Junior Amanda Wells (Mason/William Mason), sophomore Sydney Kilgore (Pleasant Plain/Little Miami) and freshman Keaghan Burden (Brunswick) netted three goals each to lead the Ohio Northern women's lacrosse team in a 15-13 loss to Southwestern (Tex.) on Tuesday night at Varsity Field.
The Polar Bears fall to 2-4 overall, while the Pirates improve to 3-0.
Wells added a team-high two assists to her stat line to finish with a team-leading five points.
Kilgore and Burden had one assist each.
Sophomore Elizabeth Graham (Riverside/Carroll) tallied two goals for ONU to go with one each from sophomores Avary Snyder (Uniontown/Lake) and Emma Perry (Pickerington/North).
Sophomore goalkeeper Molly Dixson (Cannonsburg, Pa./Canon-McMillan) made six saves for the Polar Bears.
Deanna Hames led SU with four goals, while Raven Garcia tallied three goals and three assists for a team-high six points.
In what was a tightly contested game throughout, the Polar Bears got off to a solid start, leading 4-2 at the end of the first quarter courtesy of goals from Snyder, Kilgore, Burden and Perry.
SU outscored ONU 6-4 in the second quarter to send the game into halftime tied at 8-all.
The Pirates started to take control in the third quarter, outscoring the Polar Bears 6-2 in the period to take a 14-10 edge into the fourth.
SU added another goal to increase its lead to five early in the final quarter, but ONU had an answer.
Kilgore scored on an assist from junior Meredith Miller (Noblesville, Ind.) with 9:52 remaining, and Graham added another with five minutes left.
Wells scored with 2:15 remaining to bring ONU within two, 15-13, but the Pirates were able to hold on for the win.
SU outshot ONU 34-28 and held a 20-16 edge in ground balls.
The Polar Bears return to action on Thursday to face Northwestern (Minn.) in a neutral-site game in Georgetown, Texas.
